Union Hospital to Build Comprehensive Cancer Center

Union Hospital today is building a comprehensive cancer center on the north side of the hospital at the corner of Seventh and Beech Streets.

The new Hux Cancer Center at Union Hospital will include state-of-the art radiation therapy as well as office space for medical oncologists, PET CT diagnostic imaging and a variety of services to support cancer patients and their families.

"Our patients express very high satisfaction with our current radiation therapy program in the Hux Cancer Center but have to travel throughout the medical system for all the other components essential to their care. With this facility, they will have much of their medical and support needs fulfilled in one location which will help ease their fight against cancer," said David R. Doerr, president and CEO of Union Hospital Health Group.

The three-story, 70,000 square foot buildingwas designed by The Estopinal Group. The $15 million project is set to begin in late May, 2006.

Hux Cancer Center: the center was built in 1989 as the area's first state-of-the-art radiation therapy treatment center following a substantial gift by the Vernon Hux family.

New Hospital Building Project

Union Hospital plans to build a new hospital to replace its existing facility. The six-story, 575,000 square foot hospital will connect with the current hospital at 7th Street and 8th Avenue on the city's near northside.

To connect with the current hospital and power plant, the new facility plan calls for it to be placed immediately to the east of the current hospital onto and across Seventh Street between Eighth Avenue and Beech Streets. Hospital officials filed an ordinance August 4 asking the city council to vacate one block of North Seventh Street between Eighth Avenue and Beech Streets to accomplish this project. City Council voted in favor of the project at the September 14 meeting.

"We've drafted dozens of designs to look for ways of positioning the new hospital in a way that allows us to link with the existing building. Using the Seventh Street land allows for the safest, most accessible and most economical use of existing land and facilities," said David R. Doerr, president and chief executive officer of Union Hospital Health Group.

"Our facility was designed more than 40 years ago when hospital care was delivered much differently. At the time, we were excited to be providing semi-private rooms instead of 6 to 8 bed wards. Now, private rooms are quickly becoming the standard of care," said Doerr. "We look forward to giving our community a better designed and more spacious hospital with private rooms, convenient access and much better parking. It will be an environment much more conducive to health and healing."

Union officials expect to break ground on the $178 million facility in summer 2007. They plan for the new hospital to be open in the summer 2009.

"The economic impact of a project this size for the Wabash Valley is significant. We're setting the standard of healthcare for our community for the next 50 years," said Doerr.
