printUNION HOSPITAL HEALTH GROUP VOLUNTEER SERVICES

Service League LogoNow more than ever...
Volunteers make a difference!

Union Hospital Health Group has an active group of men, women and teens who generously volunteer their time, knowledge and skills. Our Volunteer Corps is a diverse group of approximately 400 adult and teenage volunteers who donated a total of 45,000 hours in 60 different areas last year.

Our volunteers assist staff with clerical and mailing tasks, patient registration, family waiting rooms, information desk and special projects. Emergency, Surgery, Critical Care, Hux Cancer Center, Clara Fairbanks Center, and our off-campus facilities all benefit from the services provided by our volunteers.

Union Hospital Service League
At Union Hospital, volunteers have the opportunity to become members of the Service League. Besides providing volunteer service to the hospital, the Service League plays a key role in raising money to purchase necessary equipment and services. The Children's Classic Run, held in October, is one event sponsored by Service League to raise money for the hospital. In the past five years, the Service League has raised more than $400,000, which was donated to the hospital. Membership dues are $5 annually for those actively volunteering.

Teen Volunteers
Students 14 years old and older who are interested in learning about health care opportunities are encouraged to volunteer during the summer program. Teens can help with activities on nursing units, therapy units and several other areas of the hospital.

VounteerChaplain's Office
The Chaplain's Office utilizes volunteers as room visitors. These volunteers make room visits Monday through Friday and will contact the church with the patient's permission. If they are not affiliated with a church, the volunteer can arrange to have a volunteer chaplain visit.

We currently have 30 volunteer chaplains, but we can always use more. The chaplains are assigned one week per year to serve the patients of Union Hospital. During that week, the chaplain visits the hospital at least three times.

A greater time commitment is asked of the Intensive Care Waiting Room volunteers. These volunteers serve day or evening shifts Monday through Friday and during the day Saturday and Sunday. Volunteers act as a liaison between the families and the staff and patients in the ICU.

We ask that our volunteers make a commitment to volunteer for a four-hour block of time. Volunteers will also complete training and orientation sessions to familiarize themselves with the hospital and feel part of a team.

For more information about the many volunteer opportunities available, please contact Volunteer Services at (812) 238-7674 and complete an application. Our office is located on the lower level of Union Hospital and is staffed between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on weekdays.

We invite you to join our team!
