Union Hospital's Medical Rehabilitation Department Earns CARF Accreditation

Union Hospital has been informed by CARF, the Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission, that it has been accredited for another three-year period for its inpatient rehabilitation program and stroke specialty program.

Transform In 12
Terre Haute, IN - Union Hospital Outpatient Nutrition Center and the Center for Fitness and Performance invite you to join a 12-week transforming weight loss program. You'll receive education, a personalized meal plan and training on a safe, healthy way to lose weight. Program will start October 27 and run through January 5, 2009.

Meetings will be held on Monday evenings from 5:30 to 6:30pm at Union Hospital's Professional Office Building. In addition to the educational meetings, each participant will get a personal training session each week and membership at the Union Hospital's Center for Fitness and Performance for the 12-week period. Union Hospital Children's Classic Run
The Children's Classic Run, a 1-mile walk and run for children in grades kindergarten through eighth, will be Saturday, September 27. Entertainment/registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Race start time is approximately 10 a.m (please have your children here by 9:30 a.m.) at 1801 North 6th Street, Terre Haute (one block North of Union Hospital).

Child Developement Center Celebrates 25 Years of Service

54th Annual Service League Ice Cream Social
Service League Ice Cream Social July 11
The Service League of Union Hospital will host its 54th ANNUAL Ice Cream Social and Used Book and Video sale on Friday, July 11, from 11am-4pm at Union Hospital in the Green Room, lower level. Tickets are $3 each, which covers ice cream or frozen yogurt, homemade dessert and beverage. The public is welcome to attend. Proceeds from Service League events are donated to Union Hospital for advancements in healthcare.
Union Hospital CNO Selected as National Baldrige Examiner
Carol Roesch, Union Hospital Chief Nursing Officer, has been selected to serve a one-year term as a Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Examiner. The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, created by an Act of Congress in 1987, is the highest level of national recognition for performance excellence that a U.S. organization can receive. The success of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Program is dependent on a board of volunteer Examiners who evaluate Award applications. Examiners are the heart of the Program, as they give tremendous time and energy to evaluating applications and to helping organizations learn about the Program and its value.
David Doerr Earns Top Healthcare Management Credential
David R. Doerr, FACHE, president and chief executive officer, Union Hospital, Terre Haute, Indiana recently became a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, the nations leading professional society for healthcare leaders.

"Because healthcare management ultimately affects the people in our communities, it is critically important to have a standard of excellence promoted by a professional organization," says Thomas C. Dolan, PhD, FACHE, CAE, resident and chief executive officer of ACHE. "By becoming an ACHE Fellow and simultaneously earning board certification from ACHE, healthcare leaders can show that they are committed to providing high-quality service to their patients and community."

Fellow status represents achievement of the highest standard of professional development. Only 7,500 healthcare executives hold this distinction. To obtain Fellow status, candidates must fulfill multiple requirements, including passing a comprehensive examination, meeting academic and experiential criteria, earning continuing education credits and demonstrating professional/community involvement. Fellows are also committed to the ongoing professional development and undergo recertification every three years.
Union Hospital Foundation Announces Scholarship Recipients
Union Hospital Foundation is pleased to announce the students selected to receive scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year. Nineteen students were awarded over $23,000 in scholarships by the Union Hospital Foundation. These include nine scholarships for nursing students, four scholarship awards presented to students pursuing other health career degrees such as physical therapy, respiratory therapy and speech pathology, two scholarships awarded to an employee of Hospice, four scholarships awarded to children or employees of Union Hospital Health Group and a scholarship awarded to an area student athlete.
These scholarships are made possible by charitable gifts and bequests made to Union Hospital Foundation. Many of the scholarships were established in memory of or in honor of a loved one or a colleague by those who made gifts.

Speech does not come easily to a stroke patient, a cancer patient who has had a laryngectomy, or a child who stutters or has language problems.
Communication difficulties, no matter how severe, often interfere with the social, emotional and occupational lives of adults. In children, communication disorders may impede their educational progress and social development.
Bertoli Named Union Hospital Fuondation Director
(Terre Haute, IN)-- The Union Hospital Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Jim Bertoli as its executive director. He will begin his work with the Foundation on April 14, 2008.

ER Open House at WCCH/ Vermillion Parke Community Health Center Open House
West Central Community Hospital (WCCH) and the Vermillion Parke Community Health Center (VPCHC) will both host an open house March 18 from 3 to 7 p.m. with tours, hors d'oeuvres, and local EMS on site.
WCCH, located at 801 South Main Street in Clinton, will have a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Emergency Department and Lab expansion at 2:30 p.m. The 3,855 square foot addition will provide a waiting area with patient registration services, private consultation room, private triage and medical screening exam room, and additional treatment rooms. The 543 square foot Terre Haute Medical Lab will provide a waiting area for patients and a restroom. The project was made possible through the gift of $1.3 million from the estate of Mary G. Overpeck in honor of her deceased husband, Orval F. Overpeck.
The Vermillion Parke Community Health Center, located across the front WCCH parking lot at 777 South Main Street, will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at 3 p.m. The Center has opened and is accepting patients. Please call 765-828-1003 to make an appointment. They also accept walk-in patients. Office hours for the clinic are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The mission of the VPCHC is to provide comprehensive, quality primary health care and related services to those in need of medical care, including the medically underserved and vulnerable populations of Vermillion and Parke counties in Indiana without regard to the patient's ability to pay. This clinic will be a federally qualified Community Health Center (FQHC). A FQHC, also called a CHC or Community Health Center, is a non-profit consumer-directed health care corporation that provides comprehensive primary and preventive health care services. Union Hospital Receives Grant for Telemedicine Program
Terre Haute's congressional leaders helped secure more than $1.8 million for local projects included as part of the 2008 federal budget. $195,000 was budgeted for Union Hospitals telemedicine program. The RuralHouseCalls.com initiative will allow patients to renew their medications online, request referrals, schedule appointments, update part of their personal information, and eventually even conduct e-visits with their doctors, said Hicham Rahmouni, information technology specialist for Union Hospital.

'What we currently have in place is just basics of the work flows of how it would work and so on,' Rahmouni said. 'These funds will actually allow us to launch the program.'

Plans Move Forward for Union Hospital

Union Hospital's building and renovation project took a giant leap forward last week as $176.5 million in bonds were sold at market. Proceeds from the bond sale will finance new hospital construction as well as significant renovation to the existing hospital.
Union Hospital First to Purchase HD Robotic Surgery Technology
June 26, 2007-

(Terre Haute, Indiana) Union Hospital is the first in Indiana to announce the purchase of robotic surgery technology with 3D in HD (high-definition). The da Vinci S Surgical System integrates 3D HD laparoscopy and state-of-the-art robotic technology to virtually extend the surgeon's eyes and hands into the surgical field. The system is designed to enable new, minimally invasive options for complex surgical procedures.
West Central Community Hospital Receives Gift
May 24, 2007-

West Central Community Hospital was the recipient of a $1.3 million gift from the Estate of Mary G. Overpeck in honor of her deceased husband, Orval F. Overpeck. Mrs. Overpeck was a retired school teacher who remained active in several local organizations until declining health rendered her homebound for the last year of her life. Mrs. Overpeck visited friends and family who were patients in Vermillion County Hospital, and in later years was a patient herself at West Central Community Hospital. It was Mrs. Overpeck's fondest wish to honor her late husband's memory with a memorial that others would see and acknowledge.
Joanne Goldbort Elected to Board of Directors of AWHONN

The Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) today announced that Joanne Goldbort, Director Of Maternal And Child Services At Union Hospital in Terre Haute, has been elected to serve on the 2007 AWHONN Board of Directors.Dr. Goldbort has worked in maternal/child nursing for 30 years. Prior to her current position, she was a staff nurse in Labor and Delivery at Union Hospital, an Adjunct Instructor at Indiana State University, and a perinatal educator with Matria Homehealth in Indianapolis."It has been my great pleasure to work to mobilize and lead colleagues in support AWHONN�s mission and goals. My professional experiences have taught me that AWHONN nurses make a significant difference in the health of women and newborns," said Dr. Goldbort. "I look forward to continuing in that role as a member of the AWHONN Board of Directors."
Wound Healing Center Opens at Union Hospital

Scheduled to open in December on the 4th Floor in its Professional Office Building at 1530 N. 7th Street in Terre Haute, The Wound Healing Center at Union Hospital will offer state-of-the-art treatment for those suffering from diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, infections, compromised skin grafts and flaps, and wounds that have not healed within 30 days.

Union Hospital's Clara Fairbanks Center for Women is celebrating their 10 year anniversary with an Open House, Friday, October 20th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Clara Fairbanks Center has been serving the women in and around the Wabash Valley with diagnostic and screening mammograms as well as breast ultrasound.
