Basic Qualifications

Basic qualifications for being a Hospice of the Wabash Valley volunteer are a sensitive approach to fellow human beings, respect for others' values and belief systems and a desire to help maintain the dignity and self-worth of the incurably ill patient and family.

Volunteer Education

One of the principles of the Hospice philosophy of care is the use of the volunteers as a part of the interdisciplinary team. Proper education and training of the volunteer is essential.

All volunteers are required to attend a series of orientation sessions (12 hours) before becoming certified as a Hospice volunteer. The sessions will include instructions about living with incurable illness, loss, death and bereavement. Volunteers learn about coping with grief, communication and listening, and ways to maintain their own sense of well-being as they serve as a support system.

Those who are willing to make a commitment of at least 3 to 10 hours a week to a client family, and who have not themselves suffered a severe personal loss within the last year, can receive more information about enrollment in the training programs. Applications and interviews are scheduled by contacting Hospice of the Wabash Valley at (812) 234-2515 or (800) 216-5692.
